How effective have people in the United States been in promoting democracy between 1920 and 2000?

You will analyze whether laws, organizations, events and/or ordinary citizens have been effective in promoting democracy.

 

In an essay, pick laws, organizations, events and/or ordinary citizens that promoted democracy from three of the following time periods:

Between 1920 and 2000, the United States:

  • Economy boomed in the 1920s
  • Harlem Renaissance showed the power of art in leading to human dignity
  • The Great Depression lead to a stronger federal government helping individuals
  • Fought in World War II to fight Nazism, and Fascism
  • Opened up workplace opportunities to African Americans and women during World War II
  • Had a civil rights movement for equal political, economic and social rights
  • Fought the Cold War at home and abroad
  • Fought the Korean War
  • Fought the Vietnam War
  • Fought poverty with Great Society programs
  • Opened the doors to immigrants from all over the world (1965)
  • Had a woman’s rights, gay rights, Indian rights movements in the 1960s and 1970s to fight for equality
  • Had an environmental movement to try to protect our resources
  • Had internal migration to urbanize and suburbanize
  • Presidents which brought change including Hoover, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush
