- The Great Depression lead to a stronger federal government helping individuals
- Fought in World War II to fight Nazism, and Fascism
- Opened up workplace opportunities to African Americans and women during World War II
- Had a civil rights movement for equal political, economic and social rights
- Fought the Cold War at home and abroad
- Fought the Korean War
- Fought the Vietnam War
- Fought poverty with Great Society programs
- Opened the doors to immigrants from all over the world (1965)
- Had a woman’s rights, gay rights, Indian rights movements in the 1960s and 1970s to fight for equality
- Had an environmental movement to try to protect our resources
- Had internal migration to urbanize and suburbanize
- Presidents which brought change including Hoover, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush
