12 Birmingham
\”Non Violence\”Birmingham was known as the most segregated city in the south. Whites had bombed so many African American homes that it had the nickname Bombingham. The struggle for civil rights there was long and filled with violence, but it was the Children’s Crusade which made a big impression on people outside the south. While violence toward Emmet Till made some people more fearful, the Birmingham Movement showed African Americans overcoming fear to fight non-violently for equality and justice.
In this unit, we will study the factors which led to the success of the Children’s Crusade. They include:
- children
- Bull Connor and violence
- the media
- Birmingham leaders (Nash, Bevel, Shuttlesworth, King)
- radio disk jockeys
- federal government and John F. Kennedy
You will also study non-violence. “Non Violencehttp://wn.com/martin_luther_king_on_nonviolence
