Just another West Hartford Public School BLOG Campus weblog

This Week: 12/7- 12/11

Monday and Tuesday LAB classes will do a Lab called “Formula of a Hydrate”  Due date for this lab will be THursday, Dec. 10th.

Monday night and Tuesday night Homework is to STUDY when you use -ite, -ate, -ide, -ic, and -ous endings in naming compounds, ions, and acids.  There will be a QUIZ on Wednesday that will cover:

Quiz on Wednesday

a) Formula Writing -  Ionic and Covalent compounds-  Write formulas from names and write names from formulas.  Learn Greek prefixes:  mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, deca.   You will be expected to know the common polyatomic ions (the seven) that you were quizzed on last week.

b) Naming of common ternary acids (based on common polyatomic ions you have learned)      Nitric, Sulfuric,Carbonic, Acetic, Phosphoric .   Learn also the binary acids:  hydrochloric, hydrobromic, etc  (H + the halogen ions)

c)  Be able to identify a salt, and use the other vocab terms in section 7.1 of your text.

d)  From the formula or symbol of compounds, ions, and acids you should be able to properly name the substance using the correct ending (ide, ite, ate, ic, ous)

This quiz will be worth 0.3 x test.   ACE it!

Wednesday’s Night’s Homework is to read and study SEction 7.3 in TEXT. This is due Thursday.   Bring your calculator to class every day for the rest of this week.  , BE sure you can add up formula masses, and define key terms:  formula mass, molar mass, and learn the formula for percent composition.

Thursday Night’s Homework is to read about Oxidation Numbers, in Section 7.2 in Text. Answer questions on page 218 in your notebook.  Study the Oxidation Rules, 1-8, p. 216.

Weekend Homework:   TEST on Chapter 7 - Sections 7.1-7.3  NOT section 7.4   Study notes and text.

November 2- November 6

Monday -  QUARTER DEPARTMENT exam  -

Prepare by studying your notes,  review labs, handouts and quizzes, reread Chapters 1-4,  and use the class review sheet.

This week you should be studying how elements behave (their reactivity) based on their size (radius), electronegativity,  and ionization energy.    Last week we learned about the history of the periodic table (Mendeleev and Moseley) and learned how it was first arranged and how is it now arranged.   We also learned about the three major blocks of the periodic table (s,p,d, and f).

Tuesday – No School    Homework for Wednesday is to read and study section 5.1 in your text.

Wednesday -  short Wednesday -  Lesson on Atomic Radius.

Thursday -  Ionization energy and Electronegativity -  Lecture/Discussion.

LAB will be to finish the Alkaline Earth Metal Lab,

Friday – Periodic Table Activity

This week…

October 19 -  October 23

This week students will

1. turn in your flame test lab -  complete the handout -  due Wed.

2.  do practice problems on light and be sure you can get the correct answers -  in class assignment.

3.  study equations for light, E = h v  and c = lamda v    Be able to use these equations to solve problems like those in your lab and class practice.

4.  Prepare for QUI Z on Friday.  The quiz will cover light problems (not elctron configuration).
