New Future Fiction

March 29th, 2011 by

Just in! If you like Future Fiction – Check out (or reserve) these new titles:

XIsle – Baz and Ray, survivors of an apocalyptic flood, win places on X-Isle, an island where life is rumored to be better than on the devastated mainland, but they find the island to be a violent place ruled by religious fanatic Preacher John, and they decide they must come up with a weapon to protect themselves from impending danger.

The Limit -  When his family exceeds its legal debt limit, thirteen-year-old Matt is sent to the Federal Debt Rehabilitation Agency workhouse, where he discovers illicit activities are being carried out using the children who have been placed there.

A Crack in the Sky - Thirteen-year-old Eli Papadopoulos, a member of the family that founded InfiniCorp, the massive corporation that runs everything in the domed cities, becomes worried when the sky keeps shorting out, but his questions get him sent away to the Tower where he meets Tabitha, and together they make plans to escape.

The Unidentified - In a futuristic alternative school set in a shopping mall where video game-playing students are observed and used by corporate sponsors for market research, Katey “Kid” Dade struggles to figure out where she fits in and whether she even wants to

Brain Jack - In a near-future New York City, fourteen-year-old computer genius Sam Wilson manages to hack into the AT&T network and sets off a chain of events that have a profound effect on human activity throughout the world.

Trash - A group of fourteen-year-old boys, who make a living picking garbage from the outskirts of a large city, finds something special and mysterious that brings terrifying consequences.

Invasion - After his parents are killed in an automobile accident, sixteen-year-old Colt McAllister moves to Arizona where he is recruited by a secret organization to join the battle against malevolent, supernatural creatures from another world

Worldshaker - Sixteen-year-old Col Porpentine is being groomed as the next Commander of Worldshaker, a juggernaut where elite families live on the upper decks while the Filthies toil below, but when he meets Riff, a Filthy girl on the run, he discovers how ignorant he is of his home and its residents.

Does it Matter?

March 4th, 2011 by

number4The new movie I Am Number Four, and the book that inspired it, were written by two authors: a writer just out of college and James Frey. Frey, who is most well-known for his dishonest autobiography, has the intention is to create a writing factory (Full Fathom Five) that churns out young adult series that could make a lot of money as movies. He finds young, unemployed, unestablished writers and offers them lousy contracts to write these books, and make any changes that he wants, as he is the “genius” behind the concept.

I have a real problem buying books that are created simply to make money from teen readers. You deserve more respect than that. It feels manipulative and dishonest.

Here is an article about it http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/20/magazine/20FOB-WWLN-t.html

That being said, I do respect you as thinkers, so I have purchased two copies of the novel so that you can decide for yourself. You can reserve them at the desk, as they are both checked out!
