Mesopotamia GRE

December 4th, 2011 by

Welcome to your Ancient Civilizations Guaranteed Research Project!

Before we begin, let’s see what you already know about doing research:  7th GRE Pretest

Discover Mesopotamia with Bugs Bunny

Evaluating Information:
Are you ready to Google? Make sure you can use the language of the 5 w’s to defend a web site’s reliablility:

Evaluating Information on the Free Web

Keyword Searching:
Consider all of the different words you will use to search.
Don’t forget to CTRL F to search a web page for a certain word or phrase.

Where can you look for MESOPOTAMIA RESOURCES (or see tab at top of blog)
There are many different reliable, published resources available to support your research. Much of the library’s collection had “gone digital.” We now have databases, online encyclopedias, e-books, e-reference sets, as well as links to Google Books and more!

Note-taking:  Once you find great sources, and carefully read them, it is time to extract the information that you need to support your topic. This year we are practicing “Target Highlighting” (see Notetaking 101) and then pulling our notes into bulleted lists into note boxes (see Contributions of Ancient Civilizations NOTE)

Now that you have become well read in your topic, what do you want to say about it? You must decide on a stance, present an argument, or prove your opinion about an aspect of your topic as it relates to ancient civilizations.

Submit your Thesis Statement

Outline:   Use this graphic organizer to sort and arrange your notes in order to support your thesis. If you need more room, please use the back. Make sure you include the subtopic in the top of the box. empty outline graphic organizer   sample completed graphic organizer

Works Cited List: Now that you have settled on which sources you will actually use in your paper, it is time to include them in a works cited list using Noodlebib. 7thgradenoodlebibinstructions2011    Noodlechecklist   (Make sure you print it out from the print button in Noodlebib.)

What’s left in the Big 6 Process? Time to synthesize your work. Write a paper that defends your thesis with evidence from your research!

Writing the Intro : Remember the inverted triangle.

Timeline and due dates for this project are not available due to the individualized nature of the assignment. Student progression is on an individual basis. The daily homework assignments are based upon the daily objective, however not everyone is exptected to be on this step of the research process. Students should complete homework based on where they are in the process with best efforts to make progress each night.
