I predict that Roy will find the boy who runs and they will be really good friends . I predict that Roy will find the boy and be friends with the boy, because Roy seems very determined to find the boy and get to know him. I also predict that the the boys sister is the girl who confronted him it lunch that day because the girl seemed to be standing up for the boy that day and she got me wondering if she is related to him or is she his friend. I decided that the strange boy must be his sister because the boy seems to never stop running or talk to anyone.
I agree with you. I think that roy and the boy will become friends. I also think that, when the girl confronted Roy in the lunch room, that she was standing up for the boy, like she knew Roy was chasing him.
I agree. Why else would Beatrice do that if she didn’t want to stand up for him. I think she has some sort of personal connnection, because she probably didn’t get hurt when Roy bumped her if she broke a star linebackers collarbone. I think that is the only answer.

I definetely think that too. It is very interesting about how she just got mad at him out of nowhere. I think she should be in anger management classes because of her temper because she didn’t need to be that rude to him. Instead she could’ve just talked to him. I did forget about this part and I don’t remember something about Beatrice, but I think I know something that isn going to happen. It’s also unexspected that Roy standed up to Beatrice since she is so tough.
It doesn’t surprise me. If Roy can stand up to Dana Matherson, he can stand up to Beatrice. Roy isn’t the coolest kid, but he is tough. He took Dana’s smacks and just kept sitting up. So he can take Beatrice the Bear’s hits too.
Maybe, maybe not. The movie has the same things happening, but I love the book even more!
why do you like the book so much Delina? Tell us. Shout it out for the whole world to here! I enjoy the book too. I enjoy it because of the way it’s writen. I don’t read much realistic fiction, but I’m enjoying this one. The author puts in detials, and explains it well so that you can understande all of the meanings. But he also puts in mysteries that are very interesting.
I agree I think that also because Roy found out where mullet fingers was hiding out. I predict that mullet fingers is going to change where he stays. I also think that roy is going to go to that place again. Another prediction I have is that mullet fingers is going to put the snakes at the construction site.
I think the reason all of the stakes are being pulled up is because whoever is doing it want’s to save the owls. Unlike The Art of Keeping Cool, I’m really enjoying the book. it might not be the most fasinaating story i’ve ever read, but so far it’s really well writen.
I disagree that this is better than the Art of Keeping Cool. It is a very good book, but the Art of Keeping Cool was great. Perfect historical fiction book. This is why I thought it was great, because historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. The only aspect of this book that’s better than the Art of Keeping Cool was the writing. Hiassen wrote so well that he pulled a good book out of a bad genre- a kid having trouble fitting in at school. I understand that is very hard for kids, but I don’t want to read about it normally. Hiassen wrote so well, but considering the topics, Janet Taylor Lisle could have written like a Kindergartner and it would have been better.
It all depends on what kind of genre you like. before you said you really liked The Art of Keping Cool, but I didn’t. Other people that didn’t like The Art of Keping Cool might agree with me, or they might not. like i said, it all depends on the genre. I’ve never enjoyed realistic or historical fiction before, but for some resone this book really sparks me.
I really like the way the author switches back and forth between Roy and “Curly”. It’s very interesting, and it reminds ne of how Sadie and Carter switch back and forth in the red pyramid.
I’ve already seen the movie but the book rocks! I love the part where the alligators were in the portapotties, even though I read it a couple days ago it still cracks me up. Ha ha the little one almost bit off the reptile wranglers thumb. Poor guy.
The way the author gets me hooked on the story is how he leaves the story hanging. Like with the running boy or the alligators in the portty-poties. He also adds interesting parts to the story, like the bully, or the girl confronting him.
I agree with Officer Delinko. When kids do pranks, they normally don’t do something that could pose a threat to them but only to others. If it was kids, they would most likely have gotten bitten by the alligator. I think the most likely answer is an environmentalist. It would be someone who has experience in the wild ans someone who doesn’t want more buildings built. That would be an environmentalist.
I agree that kids wouldn’t fill in the wholes where the stakes were, but i disagree that it wa an enviormentalist. I disagree because I think it’s sombody that wants to save the owls; why else would they be in the story?
what made me curios to know more was when Officer Delinco found the alligators in the portty-poties. I didn’t know who did it or why. Or how, for that mater. but I did think it was funny when the smallest gator tried to bite the mans thumb off.
I agree. It also made me curious when Officer Dinklo found the alligaters in the porta-potties. But what made me really curious was how did he know the alligaters were there. Were they making noise but the auther did not metion that in the book? Did he just guess?
I think that the reason Officer Delinco knew that the alligators were there was because he had first heard a splash and then he shown his flashlight down into the porta potties, and he saw the alligators. I think it was just because he saw them in his flashlight beam.
I think the strange boy is the guy who put the alligators in the porta-potties and he is planning to put the snakes somewhere. I think the strange boy trying to sabatoge the construction. I think this because in the story it says ” I am not the the boy who was running”. Another example is he said ” I will not tell you who I am”. This shows me that he might be the guy who is trying to sabatoge the construction because he does not want anybody to know his name so he could not be a suspect.

I was really suprised to find out that the running boy was Beatrice’s brother. Even though I kind of figured he might be, it still was a suprise to find out just like that.
I think that the boy and mullet fingers will confront eachother again. i think roy will see his face and they will become friends. I have a feeling that beatrice is related to mullet fingers. I think this because she was defending him and mullet fingers wouldn’t say who he was so they are probably trying to keep his identity a secret. I think that roy and mullet fingers will confront by the construction site.
I also think that it is possible that the prankster could be a wanted criminal. This would make sense because Officer Delinko’s police car windows were spray-painted black so he couldn’t see the criminal. I also think it might be a criminal because the culprit used live alligators. This could kill somebody, so it is a criminal act. So even if that person wasn’t a criminal before, they are now.
I disagree. I don’t think the person who is pranking the construction site is a wanted criminal. I think it was the strange boy. I think it was the strange boy because I think the strange boy wants to save the owls because the auther keeps dropping little hints. For example the auther writes ” I hope I did’t scare the owls”. That’s why I think it is the strange boy.
I like how it switches back and forth in between curly, officer delinko, and roy. It tells what is happening everywhere. It’s funny to hear about alligators in pota-potties and then switch to roy talking to garrett and beatrice and roy eating lunch. I like it better when it is with roy narrarating.
Idon’t think that Danna will bully Roy anymore. I don’t think Danna will bully Roy anymore because Danna will be afraid of Roy. I think Danna will be afraid of Roy because Roy lost his temper real easiley. Danna will stay as far away from Roy. I think this because in the story when Roy went to Dannas house Danna could have beat Roy up right there but he did not.
I disagree on the fact that Roy loses his temper easily. Many kids would have hurt Beatrice the Bear if she did to them what she did to Roy. Roy didn’t then, or at lunch when he talked to her. It wasn’t a temper issue. He was being choked. He could have tried to fight Dana at Dana’s house while Dana wasn’t at full strength, but he just gave him the apology letter and left. This is why I don’t think Roy loses his temper easily.
I disagree with that. I think that Dana will want to get bak on Roy. I think that Dana didn’t hurt Roy was because he knew he couldn’t while this nose was broken. I dont think that Dana is scared of Roy, nor Roy of Dana. I dont think that Roy loost his temper, I think that he was just tring not to sufficate. I agree with Jack on that one.
I think that Roy was stupid to flip over the bag of snakes. I know that he didn’t know what was in there, but you still shouldn’t flip over a bag you find lieing around in the woods. Also I think that the person who bound and blinded Roy was the boy that was running. I think this because he was talking in a voise that sounded unnatural to Roy. If the person wasn”t the boy, i Dont’ know why he would need to hide. that’s why i think the person that “captured” Roy was the boy. I HAD AN IDEA TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TYPE MORE. YOU COULD HAVE A COMPOTITION TO SEE WHO CAN TYPE THE LONGEST RESPONCE TO THEIR BOOK EACH WEEK.
I disagree. I don’t think it was a bad choice because any bag could have been the bag with the snakes. I mean he fliped over each bag. What if the first one was the one with the snakes, what if it was the second are you saying it was only a bad choice to flip it one of them over and not the rest. Any bag could have been the bag with the snakes.
I wonder now that Roy kows that Baetrice Leep is the strange boys sister that Roy will try to get information from her. I think Roy will because Roy seems so determined to be friends with that boy. I think Roy will keep trying to find until he finds the boy. Or he will keep bothering Beatrice untill she finally gives in and takes Roy to meet the boy. I also wonder if Officer David Delinklo will solve the case. He seems very determined to solve the case.
I think Roy will try to get more info, but I don’t think he should. Number one is it’s Beatrice’s buisiness. If she doesn’t want others to know, they shouldn’t. Number two, Beatrice will slug Roy. She’s much stronger then him, and maybe even Dana Matherson. So Roy should just mind his own buisiness. Once he gets involved, he can’t get out.
I don’t think Delinko will solve the case. Normally, a star character gets glory. Hiassen seems more like a realistic writer. Delinko isn’t that smart. If he nods off at a moment that could change his career, he’s not detective material. That’s why Delinko won’t solve the case.
I think that Beatrice is putting on an act that she is so tough. I think she really cares about people. This is why she stopped Dana Matherson. She also helped Mullet Fingers when he was hurt, even when he’s only her stepbrother who just came into her life. I think these things show Beatrice is a caring person.
I agree that Beatrice does care about people. She helped Roy and her brother. but I disagree that she isn’t tough. SCice she can pedal really fast with a heavy whieght, and she was able to pull Dana off of roy.
I’m not sure if you’re right, but she doesn’t have to be tough. Pedaling the bike is just being strong, not tough. No boy, includind Dana, would hit a girl. The boys are the ones that hurt people in this story. So Beatrice doesn’t have to be tough.
I predict that mullet fingers is using Roy’s name because roy’s parents got a phone call and mullet fingers was hurt not Roy. i accidentaly read the first sentence of the thirteenth chapter and it said that beatrice and roy were even now.

I predict that Roy and the strange boy will try to stop the construction to save the owls. I predict that just when the bulldozer is going to smash everything down the strange boy comes in and try to stop the construction. I think the strange boy is going to stop the bulldozer by standing in front of the bulldozer. I predict this because in the story it says ” do the bulldozer first thing Monday morning.” I predict that they are trying to save the owls because in the book it mentions some things a out the owls being dangered.
I agree. Why else would the book be called Hoot? It has to be something to do with owls. I doubt Hiassen will make the owls die. This is why I agree with you. It is the only way.
I agree. I believe in mullet fingers, roy, and beatrice. I predict that roy is going to try to get kids at his school to help stop the construction. I also think that officer delinko is going to find out that roy has something to do with the construction site. I think they are going to have a chase wher O.D. will try to catch roy and then beatrice will help him escape to the construction site to try to stop the bulldozer from burying the owls and their dens.
I think that that the boy that is “Roy,” is actualy Mullet Fingers. I think this because Mullet Fingers was hurt, and he had to go to the hospital scice he was bitten by the dogs. I dont know why MF is going by Roy instead of his real name.
He went by Roy’s name because Lonna would have been called if he had used his real name. She would send him away. He also could have been reported for Truancy. That is against the law, and he could’ve been arrested. He had to do these things to stay out of trouble. I am surprised that Roy did this, though. He seems like a boy who would stay out of trouble.
I think he used roys name because mullet fingers didn’t want his mom to get involved because he didn’t want his mother to find out that he was back in florida. He also didn’t want to get sent to military school again. he wants his identity to be kept a secret. I predict that mullet fingers will stop the construction.
I think that Dana Matherson is a lot like Mullet Fingers. They both don’t have many friends. They both would run away if they were locked up. They don’t obey orders. They don’t obey the law. They both have mean families. The only difference is that Dana is a jerk, and Mullet Fingers isn’t,
I think that Mullet Fingers is making the right choice. He wouldn’t do well in school. He’s not going to do anything with his education. Really, I can’t see Mullet Fingers becoming an accountant. He can’t just sit indoors. I think Mullet Fingers strength is being out in the wild. He can make a living here. Why would he spend 8 years doing something unseful to him.
I think that Roy is going to go to the construction site. But I dont think that he should. I dont think he should because I have a feeling that this time he will get cuaght with Mullet Fingers, but Mulet Fingers will get away and leave Roy. Then I think that Mullety Fingers will come back and free Roy too.
I think Roy is doing the wrong thing. I don’t have a problem with saving the owls. He’s going too deep into this, though. He didn’t have to frame Dana. He didn’t have to go over to Dana’s house. He’s doing stuff he can’t do that he doesn’t have to do.
I think that Mullet Fingers won’t be able to get out of Juvenile if he gets caught. I think Lonna is about to divorce Leon. If she does this, I think she won’t marry somebody that’s inept. With to people after Mullet fingers, it could be a lot harder.
I think that Dana Matherson will be convicted. All the evidence points to him doing the crime. He already has a criminal record. He asked the police officer if he could have a cigarette. That’ against the law at his age. He’s got rat traps on his feet. He threw dirt in Curly’s face. Anyone who hasn’t read Hoot would convict Dana, not Roy.
I think Mullet Fingers used Roy’s name because of that he only had medical care from when he went to military school and now that he doesn’t go there, he needs to use Roy’s since he is injured. I also think that when Mullet Fingers ran away from the hospital he goes back top his little house and Beatrice comes and blames his injury on Roy. When Beatrice comes and sees him she’ll keep yelling at Roy and then he’ll start healing any of the wounds that Mullet Fingers still has. When Roy does this I think that Beatrice will still be rude to him, but because she likes him. After that I think that they will continue on their “journey.”
I can’t believe that Dana Matherson got arrested! And how could Roy muster the courage to moon Dana, only to get pinned to the ground? It just doesn’t make sense. But it’s so sad to hear that all of the Burrowing Owls are going to be buried by tons of dirt and die. And I still can’t believe that the police don’t stop the construction to save all of the owls? Don’t they even care?
I was surprised that Roy mooned Dana too. Roy knows that Dana can beat him to a pulp. He’s the toughest kid at school minus Beatrice. I agree with you about the cops. Before officer Delinko saw the owl he should have cared. Now that we’ve finished the book we’re happy that most people cared. I would’ve been excited to be interviewed but roy is different so he didn’t want to so he could keep mullet fingers’ identity a secret
I’m not. Roy’s faster. Roy is tough. Although he doesn’t have the strength to beat Dana, he can pop back up. Roy knows this. This is why he mooned Dana.
I dissagree that most people cared. Chuck Muckle didn’t care. The reporters didn’t care, they only wanted a news story. Curly didn’t care until afterwards. Everybody in the Mother Paula pancake company didn’t care. Kimberly Lou Dixon only didn’t want to have a bad public image. So I disagree that most people cared. I think the reason that Mother Paula was stopped was because the people that did care cared a lot. Mullet Fingers, Roy, Beatrice, the soccer girls Roy’s Dad… all of them put up a hard fight.

No, they don’t care. Money is what drives people in life. If they gain money while burying the owls, they’ll do it. If they build the pancake place, they gain money. This is why they’ll do it.
I was totally surprised when Napoleon Bridger buried himself. He left only his head sticking out! I was happy when they stopped the bulldozing and saved the owls. I thought that that Mother Paula knew about the owls but when she stood up to her company and held hands with Garrett and Roy I knew that she had no idea that there was owls underneath ground in burrows.
I was surprised that he buried himself too. I was also happy that they stopped the buldozing, I knew they would all along. there wouldn’t be much of a point to the story if they had.
I think it was dumb of Mullet Fingers to go onto the property. Police had grounds to arrest him because of truancy. If Delinko hadn’t had a soft spot for the owls, Mullet fingers would be arrested. Although he would have escaped, it wouldn’t have been in time to save the owls. This i why I think that Mullet Fingers shouldn’t have gone on to the property
I really enjoyed reading this book. I just finished it today. Even though I dont really like realistic fiction book, I liked this one. I’m not sure when we were supposed to finish the book, and I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to go on earlier in the week, but with all of my skiing, I havent had much time to go on the computer.
I was surprised Delinko stopped the Mother Paula’s company. He could stand with them and be known as the one who caught the thief. I give Delinko credit for not doing this. He knew what was right. That’s why he did what he did.
I think the soccer girl protesters tipped the scales. A few kids, no problem to stop. But a bunch of them, that’s hard. The crazy lengths that the kids went to to stop the pancake place made the owl side win.
It suprised me when Dana Matherson believed Roy’s made up story . I mean after all the fighting you would have thought beliving Roy is the last thing Dana would do. I think he will be in jail for a long time because he was disrespecful to the Police Officer when he called the Police Officer names. He also crossed private property. This is why I think he will be in jail for a long time.
