Social Studies Today

At this page you will find many things to help you succeed in class.  To the left you have a list of basic topics.  For preparation activities, you will most likely find what you need by clicking on your class period.

Social Studies is a diverse study of many things; from people and governments to culture and religion.  Social Studies includes the study of history but is not limited to just this one area.  It includes politics, economics, religion, technology, militarism, social movements, cultural movements, and more.  I have always been intrigued with the social aspects of history– what their effects have been upon individuals and groups, but every teacher is different.  Some are more interested in the economic importance of history while still others are concerned and focused on the importance of the individual in history.

Today more than ever, students need not just content but skills for the future.  As our futures are more connected and technological than ever, our students need to have the aptitude to negotiate and succeed in this ‘brave new world.’   So much of what we do and who we are is based on collaborative tasks.  To that end, we implement curriculum that require students to utilize technology, work collaboratively, to problem solve, to utilize multi-media, and provide opportunities for students to practice and utilize important 21st century skills before leaving our class.

What makes this subject fun to teach is that every student brings some unique content, skill, talent, or interest to the class and that everyone have an opportunity to show, discover,  and utilize these talents to the fullest.  Welcome to History.
