Parents in music class week is the week of March 28. One of your children should be bringing home a sheet with all the information, but I’m putting the same file here as well. I’m looking forward to the week!

New Set of Postings underway!

February 17th, 2011

Take a look under your student’s grade to find a new set of postings. The types of things on the blog represent what we are doing in class – singing, of course, but singing and clapping ostinatos, singing in rounds, singing using solfege or letter names, solo singings, singing inside our heads and even some speaking in funny voices. The first set is going on before the 4-day break; the remaining classes will go on the following week.

Mrs. Durocher’s class sings our new song about Cousin Peter. The class knows motions for each verse. The first solo verse is CM and the second solo verse is NH. Mrs. Goldenthal’s class shows they can use high and low voices for the poem Big Pig. Mrs. Greenfield’s class sings Burnie Bee as a class, then with 2 soloists, KK and CL.

Mr. Bassett’s class claps and sings “I’ve Gotta Car” – the rhythm is somewhat complicated, so clapping is a challenge. The second time, we put the words inside our heads for awhile. Mrs. Baker’s class sings “I”ve Been to Harlem” with an ostinato the class created. Can you figure out what an ostinato is? Miss Zieller’s class sings Alabama Gal using words, rhythm syllables and solfege, including our new note s,. Mrs. Klein’s class sings a fun game song, Ye Toop Doram.

Mrs. Thomson’s class sings the melody from Dvorak’s New World Symphony using solfege (old hat for us) and letter names from the treble clef, which we are just learning. Once we can sing it using letter names, then we can play it on the xylophones. Mrs. Forzley’s class sings a new song, Liza Jane. Ask your child which word has the highest note. Mrs. Nash’s class sings Circle Round the Zero, another song where we’re finding the highest note. Mrs. Campagna’s class sings and plays Tideo while HD hits the rhythm sticks each time we sing “window”.

Mrs. Robert’s class sings “Come Back Home my Little Chicks” with SM as the leader. Mr. Muska’s class sings “John Brown’s Baby” two ways – first the normal way and second with some words sung inside our heads instead of out loud. It is harder than you think. Mrs. Marques class sings “Cuckoo” while patting and clapping a 2-beat ostinato. Also harder than you think!
