How do you get the y-intercept when you are given to two order pairs like (3,-8) and (8,2)?
Lilah:
Good for you for posting!
Ok; so first you solve to get the slope: (y1-y2)/(x1-x2) = (-8 – 2)/(3 – 8)= (-10)/(-5) = 2.
Then you use what you know. Your desired equation is y=mx+b. You know m = 2. You can pick either point for x; say 3. Once you pick x=3, you need to say y=-8 since (3, -8) is an ordered pair – y depends on x.
So:
y=mx+b becomes…
-8 = 2(3) + b
-8 = 6 + b
Subtracting 6 from both sides, b=-14.
So your equation is y=2x+14.

Good luck studying,

Hi Ms. Corricelli,
in our challenge problem it says you always want at least 4 times as much in the savings as in the mutual fund so i said y less than or equal to (5-x-y)4, and got a constraint Y less than or equal to -4/5x+4, would that be right?
