Alright, so I tried to do question number nine in the review and again got stuck on how to put it into row echelon form. because after i switch rows one and two, all i have as row 3 is 2,2,2. I figured inorder to make it diagonal 1′s across id just multiply row 3 by a half (because it doesnt ask for reduced row echelon it doesnt need 0s everywhere) but its not the same answer as the book. And when i tried again i just dug myself into a confusing little hole. How do I do this if i take the wrong step, do I always have so start over? and how do i know which step is the right one?
Becca-
I think the book’s answer just aims to isolate one of the variables so that the matrix can be solved. Therefore there is more than one way solve the matrix, you could have isolated a different variable than the book. This is my guess.
However, Mrs. Corricelli said in our class today that on the quiz tomorrow, we will have to take the matrix all the way to reduced row echelon form, so I’d do that for this one just for some extra practice
if in one of the problems where it asks to find the determinant of the matrix greater than 2×2 by the method of expansion by cofactors, and one of the minors is 0, can we still continue to solve for the problem?
There’s no chapter 9 page yet, but I have a few questions about tonight’s homework:
1) For number 95, r is a negative number between -1 and 0. There’s an answer for it, but r was not between 0 and 1.
2) I don’t know how to start 135. Is the first term -876 or -850?
Thanks a lot!
So sorry Mariah – I put up the Chapter 9 location.
Thanks,
Mrs. Corricelli
