Hello,
Please use this spot to post questions/concerns regarding homework due Friday, 9/9. We are all here to help!
Note – the assignment is p. 538: 7, 9, 11, 13, 31, 33, 39 (a and b).
Looking for an online calculator to handle square roots? http://www.math.com/students/calculators/calculators.html

Hi,
I was having some trouble on the homework on numbers 11 and 13. On 11: leg^2+leg^2=hyp^2
then i plugged in x^2+9^2=7^2
x^2+81=49
-81=-81
x^2=-32
Thats when I got confused because then you are supposed to square root but it is a negative number.
If anyone could help me that would be great
Katie,
Good to hear from you…
Crystal clear post with lots of fabulous detail and work shown. NICE JOB!!!
Look again at 11′s diagram and 13′s diagram. Remember the right angle is a box and the corner “points” to the hypotenuse (the longest side, the one with all the ‘hype’). So on 11, the hypotenuse is 9 units.
Continuing to work forward on 11, then,
leg^2+leg^2=hyp^2
7^2 + x^2 = 9^2
49 + x^2 = 81
-49 -49
x^2 = 32
x is between 5 and 6, closer to 6
Using a calc, x = sqrt(32)
=approximately 5.66
As soon as you start getting negative numbers you are right to notice a problem! That means you are trying to have a hypotenuse that is shorter than another side. On 13, the hypotenuse is 16 units, but the process would be similar.
Hope this helps!
Again, great post!
