The Question – First HW Assignment
Sep 1st, 2011 by corricelli
You choose The Question. Please remember in your response to start with the question you are responding to (not just the number). Only respond to one, please.
1.) What is one fun fact that you learned today in class that you did not already know? (Your response should start with “One fun fact I learned today is “)
2.) When you explored the blog, did you click on any links that interested you? Which ones? Why?
(Your response should start with “Exploring the blog, I found the following link(s) to be interesting… The reason I liked them is… “)
3.) Where have you used math?
(Your response should start with “I used math to… “)

3.) Where have you used math?
I used math to solve equations and other mathematical problems in school. However, I have also used math to cook, count money, and to figure out the tip at a restaurant.
Carlos,
Great applications – cooking (with less than adequate supplies at times) is where I learned an awful lot about fractions! You too?
What is your tip strategy? How do you figure it out?
Can you expand on either application and delve deeper in the math related to either/both?
Great teamwork!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Corricelli
Question 1.
One fun fact that I learned is that Math could be connected with real life stuff such as dancing, art, etc. I was quite interested and a bit surprised about how that could be possible.
-An
An,
You are going to LOVE geometry! These types of connections are part of “measuring our world”. I am glad that this interests you!
Perhaps in the computer lab tomorrow, you might do a little research on art (particularly perspective drawing) and how it connects to geometry? These links would probably be intriguing to many of your teammates.
Great teamwork!
Mrs. Corricelli
One fun fact tht i learned was that 2 people do gymnastics. Exploring the blog, I found the following link to be interesting was allgabra 2 because that is what we will be doing next year. I used math to add up golf scores
Brian,
Could you expand on the golf scores? First, do you play? Second, what math are you using?
Agreed about the gymnastics! Team 1 seems to be a gymnastics sorta team!
As far as Std Alg 2, the better location is: http://blog.whps.org/corricelli/archives/stdalgi-team8/, just fyi.
Great teamwork,
Mrs. Corricelli
1.) One fun fact i learned today is that math is used in many different things in life.
2.) Exploring the blog i found the study tips link to be interesting because i was curious about what kind of tips you are sharing about studying.
3.) I used math to estimate how much a few thing that im going to buy will cost so that i have a brief idea of how much money i will have to pay.
Seth,
Thanks for posting!
What are you using to estimate? Could you be more specific? (Or maybe, when you alluded to math being “used in many different things in life”, did any interest you?)
Great teamwork!
Mrs. Corricelli
Exploring the blog, I found the ‘Study Tips’ link to be interesting because i think it will be helpful in the future.
Cayley,
Thanks for posting!
What did you like, specifically, in that link? You want to be real specific; or maybe ask a question?
Nice teamwork,
Mrs. Corricelli
3.) Where have you used math?
(Your response should start with “I used math to… “)
I used math in hockey. It might sound weird but I did. I used angles to project the puck off the boards. How far a player is and the amout of space i have to shoot the puck an score.
Juliana,
Not at all weird! You are using reflections – see if you can find some links on it to further provide evidence/pictures for someone who might be interested!
Great teamwork,
Mrs. Corricelli
Exploring the blog, I found the following link to be interesting, TI Talk. I found this interesting because it explains the different ways the calculator can be used. I also found this interesting because just today I went to staples to look for a calculator and this really helped with my decision. It seems that the TI-83 Plus would be a great choice, although it is fairly expensive. I was wondering if there are any other calculators that have some of the same apps such as graphing that aren’t as expensive.
Alyson,
Great thought-provoking question – totally relevant (many people are probably wondering the same thing!)!
The TI-83 Plus is an excellent choice. You need not get it “brand new”; Amazon frequently sells gently used versions of the silver edition which has more memory for programming… SOOO part of your answer depends on your application/plans… If you intend to pursue math/science/engineering (or you have an interest in programming), you may want to start learning programming and the silver edition will support your memory needs. If you are not interested in that route, the the standard ti-83 plus should be fine. The only reason I mention this is you might be able to get the silver edition for the same price as the TI-83 plus on Amazon or a similar site… If you can, it might be worth it.
Here is a great example – silver edition (used) for $60.99: http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-TI-83-Plus-Silver-Edition/dp/B00005LA9D/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314929793&sr=8-1
Note that the manual is readily available online (its on our blog homepage) so that should not be a concern.
Other opinions are welcome here, too!
Hope this helps!
Mrs. Corricelli
question 3 – I used math to do science labs because I had to calculate the data and get the average out of the number I had.
Kelly (Poland),
I like how you provided a specific example. I wonder if you could find an app/site online to find average (and maybe some other stats)? Could you be specific about the math involved with average? Is it related to any geometry concept? (Hint: Midpoint)
Great team work!
Mrs. Corricelli
I have used math to check restaurant bills and make sure that I am not being over charged. I also have used math in science when calculating force and acceleration etc. You use formulas to plug in numbers then you solve.
Katie,
I love this comment for two reasons; I love how specific you are and how you provided more than one example.
Did you find any links to back up how math might be used? Some downloadable apps for a cellphone, perhaps, to check bills? Or maybe some neat demos on math and/or science? Maybe this could be your “mission” in the lab tomorrow?
Again, great team contribution and Happy Thursday,
Mrs. Corricelli
I used math to give a tip when my family and I go out to eat. We give a 20% tip of the total bill, it’s good to know how to find the percentage. I also do a lot of projects with my dad that involve measurements and conversions.
Rosalynn,
Thank you so much for your detailed post – I am curious about some specifics…
What is your trick to finding 20% of something? Specifically what conversions do you do when working with your father?
These details will much improve your post so that the people reading can really see how math is used in your life…
Great team contribution!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Corricelli
I used math to find averages of data, for science experiments with the numbers i collected I averaged them to create a chart/graph
i used math over the summer to figure how much euro i had and what it equaled to in US dollars

I have used math in school during class. I have also used math to cook and I used it a lot in foods class last year. I also used it in science class when writing lab reports.
Question 3.
I have used math to add, subtract, divide, multiply and solve algabraeic equations. I have also used math to find out prices of objects, give tips, and find fractions so my family can split up food equally.
3.
I used math to succeed in life and to understand how to use proper measurements in cooking.
3.) Where have you used math?
(Your response should start with “I used math to… “)
I have used math to calculate the total cost of items i wanted to buy and what the sales tax would be to make sure i had enough money. I have also used math to measure out the correct portions when cooking food.
3). I use math on a daily basis without even realizing it. I use math to count such as money, pages, and other things. I use math to divide. An example would be i divided an equal amount of fruit snacks with my brother and sister yesterday. I don’t think that most people realize how much math we use on an everyday basis.
1.) One fun fact i learned today is that Barack Obama raised over $55 million dollars for his campaign through social networking.
If the total bill is $64.03 then you would say that 10% of the tip is $4.03. you multiply that number by 2. So the total tip would be $8.09.
I used Math back in Elementary school, when my 5th grade teacher taught me how to multiply and divide.
Fun Fact: I’m okay at math. I’m not bad at it, but not really good. Sometimes I double check my work and I’m still wrong. Usually its because I forget something small like adding or subtracting.
One fun fact I learned today is something that use to fit in a building know fits in your pocket
i’ve used math when i was teaching my little brother his times tables yesterday and helped him with his science homework.
question 3- to follow up on what i was saying, i used math to know percentages and adding a ridiculous amount of tax to the customers and the total cost of the product which to me getting money. RACKS ON RACKS ON RACKS.
3.) Where have you used math?
(Your response should start with “I used math to… “)
I’ve used math science class to find the volume, mass , etc of objects or total my average in a lab. I also use math when go to resteraunts and go shopping in the mall or other places. I need to make sure that I am not being overcharged for whats being purchased and to make sure im paying the resteraunt enough included with the tip.
1.) What is one fun fact that you learned today in class that you did not already know?
One fun fact I learned today is that 95% of all songs downloaded last year were not paid for. I learned this from the video in geometry and I thought it was interesting because I thought it would be more like 40% not as high as 95.
What I ment to say was that a computor used to fit in a building but now fits in our pocket
I have found two different apps for the iPhone/iPad that calculate the tip to make sure you are paying right every time. One of those apps is; “Tip” It can calculate the tip but it is unique in the way that it can split the tip between a group, so you are ALL paying the right amount. The other app is called “Bowtie tip calculator” you plug in the cost of your bill it calculates tax and then it finds out what your tip should be!
i used math in the summer when i was in europe to figure out how much my euro was equal to in us dollars. i learned for every 1 euro its equal to about 1.4 us dollars.
3.) Where have you used math?
(Your response should start with “I used math to… “)
I used math to find out how much something costs. When I go to a department store, sometimes clothing is 20% off. I have to use math to figure out how much the clothing costs with the 20% off sale
3.Where have you used math?
I have used math to figure out what how much money I need to buy something with. Knowing how to add, subtract, multiple, and divide helps you when buying things.
3.
I used to math to figure daily problems. For instance, when cooking, purchasing clothing and at a restaurant therefore I use math constantly.
question 3
I have used math in many situations other than math class. when I go out to eat and I get my check I use math to figure out the tip. I also use math in science class when I am doing labs and graphing my information and when I am at home baking so I use the right amount of ingredients.
Mrs. Corricelli,
In the ‘Study Tips’ link, i liked how it gave you websites to help you study extra for math tests or exams, or it could just help you out when your confused about something.
Cayley
3.) Where have you used math?
You really end up using math much more then you expect. Most of the time, you just do it without realizing it. I use math many times daily, such as… figuring out a tip at a restaurant, paying money at a chash register, and in science. Math plays a key role in any type of science, especially physics. Also, you have to use math a lot of currency conversions, such as when I was in Europe over the summer and I had to convert US dollars into Swiss Francs and Euros.
Question 3:
I use math while in math class, during science to measure the ingredients needed in labs, in english to figure out how many pages I have left to read, while counting in spanish class, and looking back on how many years have past in history. I also have used math while cooking and figuring out who owes what and tips when I recieve the check at a resturant. We do not realize how much math pops up in our live but, we use our skills daily.
one fun fact i learned today is that tennagers send over 2,000 text messages in a month
I used math to caclate how much the total amount of tax would be on my clothing purchase this summer.
One fun fact that I learned today in math was from the video that we watched. It said that one teenager sent over 210,000 text messages in one month. Since my bill usually says around 300, it was really surprising.
1.) One fun fact I learned today is that some types of Math are almost never used in real life.
2.) Exploring the blog, I found the following link(s) to be interesting are many of the links under the Technology section. The reasons I liked them are because they got my attention.
3.) I used math to calculate tips, or when paying for something at a cash register, while thinking about this, I found that I mainly use Math with things involving money
Eamonn,
Love the post – keep in mind that you only needed to reply to one question.
Also – keep in mind that you never know the type of math that might be useful to you in your life – its true that some math is only referred to on a standardized assessment for SOME students; others might use it throughout college – it depends on your career ambitions and intentions.
Great teamwork,
Mrs. Corricelli
3.) Where have you used math?
I have used math to do many different things and some of those things have to do with running and biking. I use math for running and biking to figure out my average speed and how much my times have improved. There are many other ways you can use math too in running and biking. You could use it to figure out how many miles you have to go and how many calories you have burned. Math has many different applications in my life and these are only a few.
3. i use math to count things like money and to figure out how much something costs with tax
1. One fun fact I learned today is that there was a girl who sent 200,000 texts in a month
Question 3:
I used math to measure things used in science labs, or to measure things when I cook things. When figuring out the tip at a restaurant I use math. Also to find out tax on clothing or anything when I buy something.
I have used math in my everyday life. from counting the time left until I go to school or weighing my meals accordingly so i get the right amount of calories.
I use math everyday. I use math to find out how much money I would need to take out of the ATM in order to purchase new shoes for me and my brother.
2.) When you explored the blog, did you click on any links that interested you? Which ones? Why?
When I explored the blog a link that interested me was the online graphing tool. For me, graphing takes a while. I take a long time to set it up, making sure everything is correct. When I was on the online graphing tool I realized that this website could help me make graphs quicker and I can’t wait to try it.
I used math today to make breakfast. I had to measure water, eggs and milk just right to make my pancakes. Math helped me make my pancakes
Mrs. Corricelli,
To find the average of numbers all you need is a regular calculator that adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides. so you don’t need a high tec calculator.
