Actuarial Science Boot Camp

The Connecticut Insurance & Financial [IFS] Cluster is sponsoring the 4th Annual Actuarial Boot Camp for high school students to be held from July 9-13, 2012 at Prudential Retirement in Hartford!

This year’s camp follows a very successful program for the last three years in which high school students receive first-hand experience in learning about actuarial careers. There is no cost to attend the boot camp! Each student will meet with local actuaries from some of the large insurance companies in the area, be offered career development advice, develop some important business skills, and most of all, be provided with actuary-led exam preparation instruction to help them pass their first actuarial exam, if they so desire!

There continues to be a shortage of actuaries in Connecticut, especially within the Hartford area. In response to that shortage, the Connecticut IFS Cluster is proud to host and sponsor the camp and is looking for top, very bright math students to participate. Click for the flyer and application (2012 ABC Flyer and Application) for additional information on the Actuarial Boot Camp along with deadline [ May 25 ] and eligibility requirements. The materials are also accessible via the IFS Cluster website.

Hope this helps,
Mrs. Corricelli

Ok, here is another opportunity related to Actuarial Science, one of our career guest speeches this year! This one is from Howard University. The point of contact is Tya N. Boyden.

Here is the email:
“Howard University’s Center for Insurance Education is preparing for its annual Summer Actuarial Program. This is a 3-week residential program geared towards students who have a high aptitude in math (600 Math SAT/60 PSAT scores). The program is a free program funded in large part by the SOA/CAS Joint Committee as well as other insurance organizations (the only expense is getting the student to & from the program). The program in 2012 will run from Sunday, June 17th – Saturday, July 7th, 2012. For those students who successfully completes the program, the Dean of the School of Business will automatically admit them to the School of Business.

This is a great opportunity to expose rising Juniors and Seniors to the field of Actuarial Science while giving them a taste of college life (living in the dorms, eating in the café and attending class sessions during the day). During the evening and on weekends after exams, the students have the opportunity to see a little of the Washington, DC area.

The deadline is April 1st, 2012. However, the sooner applications are received, the better.

I have attached the information/application for your convenience. Students can also access the information at http://www.mediafire.com/?3671ldak5b4scvz.”

Hope this helps,
Mrs. Corricelli
