Definitions of Frequently Used Bugbee Terms
Bingo Nights: The PTO holds 2 Bingo nights a year. One is for children in K-2 with a parent, and the other one is for children in grades 3-5, without parents. For a nominal fee, Bingo is played, prizes are won and refreshments are served. Fun times for all!
Book Fair: Held annually around the end of November. Hundreds of book titles, both paperback and hard cover for adults and children, as well as calendars, stationary, posters, etc. are available for purchase. The items are selected and provided by an outside vendor and a percentage of the sales is donated to the school library.
Cozy Slipper Day: Winter in-school spirit day. Students are encouraged to wear comfy clothing with socks or slippers and to bring in a stuffed toy. The PTO serves snacks while students read and/or are read to.
Curriculum Night: An informational meeting held early in the Fall. This is and opportunity for the classroom teachers to briefly present their plans, procedures and expectations and to outline the coming year’s curriculum for parents. Be prepared to sign up for an end-of-the-first-quarter conference with your child’s teacher. this evening is for PARENTS ONLY.
Election Day Bake Sale: Held each Election Day as a PTO fundraiser. Room parents call everyone in their class to solicit baked goods.
Ice Cream Sundaes Party: Held in conjunction with the opening of the Book Fair, this is an occasion for families and friends to share an inexpensive dessert while contemplating their book purchases.
Open House: Held annually in the Spring, a special evening where each classroom displays projects, bulletin boards, videos, reports etc. representing their units of study over the course of the year. A feast for the senses, it is also a chance to see what other grade levels are doing. This is an evening for Children and Adults. All adults must be accompanied by a child.
Paul Cryan: An area photographer who specializes in black and white portraits of children. This is a PTO fund-raiser and the PTO arranges his sitting schedule at Bugbee for families who wish to participate. This is in addition to the regular school pictures which are taken by another photographer early in the school year.
Plant Sale: For this PTO fund-raiser, annuals for garden planting and hanging flowering baskets, provided by a nursery supplier, are offered for sale. Plants are pre-ordered and picked up at Bugbee.
Read Across America Day: Coordinated with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, students engage in classroom and school-wide activities that foster a love of reading.
Spirit Night: To acknowledge and thank the Bugbee community for its support throughout the year, the PTO sponsors a free evening social function for families. Past nights have included dancing and games.
Wrapping Paper Sale: An annual PTO fund raiser, this sale is set up primarily as an “in-house” function: families can stock up on all their gift wrap needs and door-to-door solicitation is discouraged. Order forms are sent home, to be returned to school within a set time; delivery is usually made in November.
