DRESS CODE

The fundamentals of good taste and safety should govern what students wear to school. State law requires that students wear shoes in all areas of the school building. Attire or grooming that is disruptive or distracting to the educational environment will result in disciplinary action. The final decision regarding dress that disrupts or distracts the educational process rests with school administration.

 Help for parents and students to make good decisions about what to wear to school:

  • Shorts and skirts should be of an appropriate length for a school environment. Guideline – the student should be able to stand up straight with shoulders relaxed and the shorts/skirt must be at least as long as the student’s longest finger.
  • The bottom of shirts and tops must either cover the waistband of pants or skirts or must be tucked in. Midriffs must not be visible.
  • Tank tops, spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops may only be worn over or under another T-shirt, shirt, or blouse. Guideline – shoulder straps must be at least 2” (three fingers) wide to be worn without something under or over them.
  • Underclothing must be covered at all times.
  • Baggy pants are to be worn with a belt at the waist to allow for safe movement.
  • Transparent, mesh clothing or clothing with excessive tears or holes is not appropriate for the school setting.
  • Coats/jackets intended for outdoors are not to be worn in school during the day.
  • Head coverings of any kind including, but not limited to, scarves, bandannas, masks, kerchiefs, athletic headbands, hats, caps or hoods are not acceptable. Exception: head coverings worn for religious purposes.
  • Attire or accessories that depict logos or emblems that encourage the use of drugs, tobacco products or alcoholic beverages are not acceptable. Also prohibited is clothing or accessories containing violent, sexually suggestive or potentially offensive messages.
  • Footwear that marks or damages floors or is a safety or health hazard is not to be worn in school.
  • Sleepwear/Pajamas/Flannel Pants are not appropriate for the school setting.
  • Chains and accessories that hang from belts or belt loops are not permitted.

Field Trips

Generally, the venue of a class trip will dictate the appropriate attire; for example, casual dress is permissible on a class picnic or on a visit to an arena event whereas more formal attire is expected on a visit to the State Capitol or to an art museum. Teachers will provide specific guidance before each trip. For trips deemed to require more formal attire:

  • Boys are to follow “business casual” guidelines by wearing a collared button-down or polo-type shirt with khaki pants.
  • Girls are to wear a dress, dressy skirt, or pants with appropriate blouse, dressy top or sweater.
  • No blue jeans, T-shirts, mini skirts, sheer blouses, off-shoulder dresses or tops, attire with exposed midriff, shorts or hats.
  • It is recommended that all students wear comfortable and appropriate footwear.

Students not following the dress code may be excluded from the field trip unless immediate accommodations can be made.
