For the third year, Bristow was honored to host Kevin Johnson of the Connecticut State Library in his portrayal of Private William Riley Salisbury Webb, an African-American Civil War soldier in the 29th Connecticut Volunteers, Colored Regiment. Mr. Johnson began his portrayals in 1998 after painstakingly researching primary source documents at the CT State Library and creating a timeline of Pvt. Webb’s life. In addition to these events in Pvt. Webb’s life, Mr. Johnson provides an historical context by weaving in facts about the Civil War era in CT. Bristow 8th-grade American Studies students and their teachers were thoroughly engaged with the portrayal, participating enthusiastically and asking thoughtful questions that led to a deeper understanding of not only Pvt. Webb’s role as an African-American solider but also of Connecticut’s role in our nation’s most traumatizing loss of American life. Thank you Mr. Johnson!
