Week of 5/7: Film

We’ll watch The Soloist this week and work together to answer this question:

How do sound and music affect the story, meaing, and theme of the movie?

Be prepared to discuss and/or take a quiz or two this week.

Week of 4/30: Film Studies

4/30 – Complete editing project; complete Chapter 5 quiz (e-mail it to me); complete Chapter 4 essay.  ALL ASSIGNMENTS DUE BY TUESDAY MORNING!

5/1 – Submit all outstanding assignments.  Present editing projects.  Introduce final project.  Schedule group work segments for final project. (Here’s the assignment: FS Movie Final

5/2 – Brainstorming session for final project.

5/3 to 5/4 – Discussion of sound in film (chapter 5)

Week of 4/23: Film Studies

4/23 to 4/27 – Complete both of our current projects. Both are due Friday!

1. Finish working with your group either on my Macbook or on the iMac in the PowWow office to finish editing your short films.

2. Use the laptops from the cart to write an essay that explains how editing contributes to the meaning, theme, and story in North By Northwest or another movie you may want to write about. Papers should range between 1.5-3 pages and should include discussion and analysis of specific scenes from the movie as evidence of your understanding of editing.

BONUS (But actually required): If you complete both assignments, read Chapter 5 in the book and begin working the online quiz. Click below or copy paste into your browser for the quiz.

4/2 to 4/3 – Complete storyboarding and filming the Editing Quiz shorts

4/4 to 4/5 – Watch North by Northwest (for real this time!)  Take notes on whether you think Hitchcock does a good job editing or not.

On Monday 4/9, we will begin editing our quiz shorts (for real this time!).

Week of 3/26: Film Studies

3/26 – Complete reading chapter four and the following, based on your group assignment . . .

1. How do cutting to continuity and sequence shots relate to realism? (pp. 142-146)

2. How do cross cutting and the 180 rule relate to classicism? (pp. 147 – 163)

3. How do thematic montage and abstract cutting relate to formalism?  (pp. 163-177)

4. Please take notes on all bold terms in chapter four.

 

3/27 – We will jigsaw the different parts of the chapter so everyone learns everything.  Like numbered students will meet, discuss the chapter, and share notes; then, students will meet in mixed groups and share what they learned.

3/28 – Chapter four quiz!

3/29 to 3/30 – Viewing and analysis of Hitchcock’s North by Northwest.

Week of 3/20: Film

3/20 to 3/22 – We will work on the Hugo essay test. Here are the details: FS Visual Analysis

3/23 – Please read Chapter Four: Editing

3/2 – Complete and discuss mise en scene and movement videos.

3/3 – Go over movement quiz and chapter three notes.

3/4 to 3/5 – View and discuss movement in two short films.

Week of 2/27 – Film Studies

2/27 – Complete mise en scene practice films, present films, and discuss.

2/28 and 2/29- Chapter three (movement) open book online quiz.  Please click this link for the quiz.  If working in groups, put all members’ names in your e-mail or people will not receive credit!

3/1 – Quiz review and study of movement.

3/2 – Complete study of movement.

Week of 2/13 – Film Studies

2/13 to 2/15 – Use cameras to demonstrate the use of shots and angles.  To do this, form a group, write a skit, and film it with either a camcorder or iPhone.  We will show the movies Wednesday and discuss.

2/16 – 2/17 – Introduction of mise en scene and how filmmakers “set the stage” to make meaning in their movies.  Please read all of chapter two by Friday.

2/17 – We will have a mise en scene quiz this Friday.  Use your book to help you study.
